Grow in Your Garden
Sometimes art is an act of difiance. When I was working on the sketch for this drawing I was trying to vent my frustration at the commonly accepted American beauty standards that have been shoved down the throats of women my entire life and well beyond that. As a mother of three with not a taught bit of skin on my body, except perhaps over my shins, I was desperate to feel represented. So I began drawing women with soft rolls, less than smooth hips, and in a variety of sizes. I combined those sketches with one of my favorite things to draw, flowers. To me flowers have an inherent beauty despite not all being perfect or the same. What could be a better metaphor for women? You will see more of these drawings and I would be absolutely delighted to draw you as one of my beautiful “Flower Women.” If that is something you would be interested in please send me an email, text, or facebook message!
