Hidden Valley
There is an absolutely magical place in northern New Mexico called Valles Caldera National Preserve. It isn’t very far from our house, maybe 45 minutes, which by New Mexican standards is basically around the corner. I learned through their facebook page there was a hike you could take to get to a waterway where the river meets the steep rock cliffs and towering pine trees. The first time we went it was summer and the view when you come around the last bend is breathtaking. I had always wanted to draw the scene but I was afraid I would over complicate it with color and texture when what I really wanted to capture was the striking beauty of the natural composition that falls before you. I think keeping this drawing simple and black and white accomplishes that goal and, hopefully, give you a little window into one of my favorite places on the planet.
